How to make your office a welcome, efficient and productive place to work

If you ask architects and designers about a home office, they will definitely talk about an office which offers maximum efficiency.

Designing

Designing of a home office differs from designing of a commercial office. There are several considerations that the architect or the designer has to keep in mind while working on a home office design.

Working from home

Working from home is great and exciting because you can work in comfort and become more efficient. But it has its negative sides also. If you have a home office and it is not separated from other parts of the house or if it is too casual, then productivity loss will be a common thing.

If your home office provides too much comfort, then it will actually kill your time and reduce the efficiency. It will impact your ability to get things done. So, to become optimally effective, you will need to be able to separate yourself from other parts of the home and become indifferent to other sounds and interruptions.

Design it yourself

If you design the working space yourself, then you can be sure of taking care of all the necessary elements. There are few questions which can help you if you ask them before you begin -

  1. What will you do in the space?
  2. What type of work will be done?
  3. Will external clients be visiting the space?
  4. Will colleagues work in the same space?
  5. What type of materials will find there way to the workspace?
  6. What type of equipment is required?
  7. Will I need a computer? How many of them will I need?
  8. When will I be doing the bulk of my work?
  9. Will I be making conference calls?
  10. Will I be video conferencing?

Finding the answers to these questions will help you to develop the program for your home office.

Set up the space

Now, you are ready to set up your space. Find a place where you will set up our home office. Please remember that it should be separate from your home. It does not have to be very big or expensive.

You can convert the existing space of your house to create a home office for yourself. You can use the guestroom, which you do not use frequently, as your home office. You can also create your home office at a suitable corner of your house. Make sure it has the potential to be your space.

Your Workspace : What it should carry

You should keep all your work in this area because you will need these things while working. You should be well organized to find out things you need, retrieve them from their respective place efficiently.

You should not keep work related items in the non-office space in your home. Maintaining both the work related and non work related items in their space promotes healthy balance, which is very much necessary for a home office.

Set timing

Establish set hours for your work at home business. This will help you to balance your work life and get you enough time to relax. You will be more organized and productive if you have set timings. It will have distinct work and life timings for you.
