I have been writing about blogging and have discussed different topics related to it. I have been emphasizing on finding a topic and then blogging on it. But how do you find out a niche topic to blog on?
A few questions can help you to decide the niche topic you want to blog on. What are these questions?
Ask yourself -
When you ask yourself what you are interested in, you get the answer. The answer of this question is the blogging niche you want to be in. It will help you to find out (or at least shortlist) the probable topics. Probably you need to ask yourself what you are and who you want to be. The answer will be present in the answer.
I however understand that money is a big motivator and it is sometimes tempting to start a blog on a subject that brings in lots of money even though you are not interested in it. But starting a blog on such a money making subject without having interest in it will not be a very good idea. Instead of commercial sense, your own interest should decide the niche topic.
If a niche can earn you money, then why not start it, even though you do not have interest in it. Because of two reasons-
Blogging is a long term business and you will need to keep writing about the niche topic for a long time. If you do not have the needed interest in the subject, you will not be able to keep working on it.
Readers who read you will find out that you are not interested in the subject and then they will go away. Without traffic you will not have a business. Without the interest it will be a dull and lifeless exercise.
I understand you might be interested in writing a blog on your girlfriend Katty, but the question is “Is the topic popular?” The popularity of the topic is very much important because people will read your blog and you will earn money from the readers or traffic that comes to your blog. People should WANT information on the topic you are writing. The law of supply and demand work here too. Nobody may be interested in reading about Katty.
But also remember that you do not need a niche topic where everyone is interested. You need a topic where at least a good number of people are interested. Niche means a small but potential number of people in a group.
Topics born, rise and die. You need to check if the topic is still growing. A shrinking topic may not be very good bet because as blogging is long term, when you have an established blog the traffic may dry up and your business may too go wrong. Would you want it with your business created after so much of effort and pain?
When you want to find a niche topic that is growing, then always try to find out what people are into, what they are looking for. When you keep an eye on what people are into and what the latest trends are, you tend to find out a winning topic to blog on.
This can be a trap. You have found an interesting and popular niche for your blog. But you haven’t noticed the fierce competition in it and have jumped into it. Later you find out about the completion and but it’s too late to change anything. This happens. As you find out profitable niche, other people will also find out such profitable niches that you have found. So there will be competition. It is better for you as a new blogger to start in a niche with lesser competition.
The web is more cluttered today and it may seem that there is no niche left for you. But with research you will find out small niche where people need information and the sources of such information are less.
It’s something like becoming a big fish in a small pond rather than becoming a small fish in a big pond. Become a big marketer in a small niche. It’s much more profitable.
I personally think this is a very important question. This question can get you to the root of your success. Find out what your competitors are neglecting and attend to those issues and you will be successful. This will show the gaps where you can fit in. You can position your blog in the gaps and this will offer you an extra advantage.
Your niche topics should have enough things to say. You will need to continue writing on the topic for a long time and so you should have enough things to say. Without constant updating and ongoing content updating, your blog will die soon.
You will need to have enough content inside you which is decided by your interest, passion and energy. You will also need to have enough content idea from surroundings. You can get content ideas from forums, blogs or from web tools such as Google News, Topix, Yahoo! News, Bloglines, Technorati and Blog Pulse.
As you want to build a business with the blog, your main aim is to offer quality information and thereby earn a good amount of money from it. So, you need to find out the income streams on the topic. The topic should have good income potential and available income streams.
There are many income streams available for blogs and you need to choose those that you want to opt for. Not all income streams will work for your selected niche. For example, AdSense works on some niche but may not work well in some other niches. Like wise membership sites, consulting etc work better with some niches but not necessarily work with everyone. Affiliates work better for some and impression based advertising works better for others. So check.
Once you go through all of the above questions and likewise sort out the probable niches, it’s time to choose the niche. If you find a topic that satisfies all of the above conditions, then it is well and good, but do not always expect to find a perfect topic for your blog. Every topic may have one or the other weakness in it. Just make a good and informed decision and then start working on it. Know the weaknesses if any and work to overcome it.

How to Finance a Small Business
1. Decide how much money you need to start or expand your business.
2. Write a business loan proposal that outlines your company’s financial history and projected profits.
3. Get a credit report.
4. Apply for a bank loan if yours is an existing business. Banks typically do not lend to start-ups.
5. Opt for one of the Small Business Administration’s loan programs designed to provide start-up capital or, if you fall just short of qualifying for a bank loan, to purchase commercial real estate.
