4food is a burger shop. So, you may ask why I am writing about a burger shop! The idea is interesting and techno savvy. Besides, it is about green (environment friendly).

Probably the idea of 4food is the most idealistic concept in the fast-food industry. You can order your custom burger online and choose from over 140 million possible combinations. The employees of 4food has iPads in hand for order taking, it offers free Wi-Fi and has a green mission – use local, high-quality ingredients and compost everything that’s thrown away.

The burger shop has caught power outlets at every seat. When you get the receipt, it comes with a Wi-Fi password. The shop also has a huge video screen that shows, among other things, recent tweets and public Foursquare check-ins to the venue. In September, 4food will have a half-dozen iPads for self-service orders. Employees with iPads in hand will also walk around to take your orders.

The marketing strategy

4food does not want to spend its money on traditional marketing. It has got an unique way of marketing its food. It encourages customers to save their favorite burger combinations in the 4food system, after giving them catchy names. People can use social media like Twitter and Facebook and YouTube to convince their friends to buy them. If you are the creator of a custom burger, whenever it is ordered, you get 25 cents in 4food store credit. A burger normally costs between $5 and $10.

The food is green. 4food openly showcases its inclination towards high-quality, locally sourced ingredients. The beverages are mostly fruit tea-based concoctions. All the materials used are biodegradable. 4food has also got a huge compost machine in the restaurant’s basement that is capable of handling 400 pounds of waste every 24 hours.

All floors in 4food are made of concrete to mitigate heat.  It also has a set of high-tech shades on the exterior that can be moved around to allow sunlight to get in.

The StartupBus: The True Story Of 12 Strangers Building Three Startups, Getting Real

Posted on 12 February 2010 by Bikash

The StartupBus is a Startup Weekend -like initiative. This will be totally new thing for many of us. This is a unique concept which involves a bus and a road trip.

The StartupBus program will bring together 12 strangers. They will drive from San Francisco to in Austin around the 12th of March, around the Interactive portion of the SXSW festival. The main objective of the program is to allow the entrepreneurs to present ideas and actually develop three different startups during the two to three day bus ride to Texas.

The founder of StartupBus, Elias Bizannes (he works for Vast.com ) will select the twelve people to take part in the journey. According to him, it is like a “startup camp” on a bus. The bus will have lounges, bunk beds to rest, a kitchen, and WIFI. The participating entrepreneur will have to put the startup they develop for auction at the end of the process, which will enable people in the team to exit.

The auction will held a few weeks after the event. The technology developed will be sold to the buyer.  This auction will help in clearing the IP issues and rewarding the effort of people participating. About 20% of a final sale price will be put towards to cover costs of the experience.

StartupBus is also seeking help from sponsors to cover the event expenses. Bizannes needs to raise at least $10,000 to kick off the program.

These sort of short-term, joint- startup development programs, such as StartupWeekend, are very much necessary for developing entrepreneurship and help entrepreneurs. They will help in creation of new startups at a faster rate with the collaboration of several entrepreneurs.

However, such startup events may also create controversy. When several people work together for an intense working session and ideation, and money (in the form of stock), then the probability of controversy increases. Find a detailed description of how this has created controversies in some cases.

If you have any such startup weekend type of activities going on in your city or town, do try to take part in them. They can help you in different ways- connection with other entrepreneurs, networking opportunity with entrepreneurial resources, finding partners, gaining new knowledge, finding answers to problems faced by you as an entrepreneur.

College Guidebooks by Students : Unigo

Posted on 31 August 2009 by Bikash

Unigo: The New Type of College Guidebooks

What: Unigo.com

Who: Jordan Goldman, 26

Founded: 2008

Projected 2009 Revenue: Undisclosed

Unigo.com is a site for college students. It houses tens of thousands of college reviews, photos, videos, and articles generated by students. Using the site, both students and parents can get an uncensored look at college and University lives. They can find out the economic, social and political scenario in the colleges and universities throughout the United States.

Unigo.com has received over 10 million page views to date. This site has changed the college resource landscape into a democratic free press control by the real experts- students. Earlier, college resource was dominated by print guidebooks, college admission offices and magazine rankings. Unigo.com has change it completely, where students can actually find out what is happening inside a college or a university in the United States and decide accordingly whether to get admitted in that college or university or not.

Unigo.com is not only attractive to residents, it is also attractive to the companies that target students. Unigo has attracted lucrative advertising deals from companies like Apple, Best Buy, Dell, and the Wall Street Journal.

The Startup Story

Jordan Goldman was 17, when he tried hard to find a good college search resource that answered the questions he had. He found it difficult to understand, how could anyone make so important decision in life by just reading one or two pages in a traditional print guidebook. He found the decision of getting into a college or university, a very big one to decide based upon few pages of administrators written reviews. All he wanted was an entirely student written guidebook.

At 18, Coleman penned the pitch for “how to write a book proposal,” and sent the unsolicited packages to the top 5 publishers in the US. Probably he was lucky; Penguin Books responded to him and commissioned him to produce a book series on his concept. The first Students’ Guide to Colleges by Jordan was released and it became one of the top five best-selling college guidebooks in America.

Coleman should have been happy, but he was not. He wanted something better, more widespread and evolved.

At 23, Coleman started writing this business plan. He had no business background, and very limited savings at that time. In the next two years, he met hundreds of alumni from his alma mater. It took him seven years since he first conceived the student written guidebook to raise several million dollars from private investors and launch Unigo.com.

Impressive Statistics

On an average, Unigo.com has user-generated contributions from 2 to 10 percent of each college’s student body.

Funny or Sad?

When Coleman was hunting for an investor for 20 continuous months, he survived in New York City on less than $20,000. He divided Chinese lunch specials into multiple meals.  He also lived in 18 different sublet apartments that covered every neighborhood in NYC.

Spotting a Freelance Niche with Growth Potential

Posted on 19 August 2009 by Bikash

Specializing is a very good strategy for freelancers because specializing can bring in more business and more earning. Specializing in a niche with potential, should always be a business strategy for a freelancer whether he has started just know or is already established. To make sure you become successful in freelancing, you will need to find out a niche with growth potential. So how do you find out a hot niche for yourself?

The following tips will help you to spot a hot niche and trend with longevity and will save you from the Fleeting fads.

Get the facts to backup the claims

Find out the facts. You will always find that newspapers, magazines and websites come up with different “Top 10″ lists. Do not take any of such lists at their face value. You should research yourself to find out about the current trends. Dig out the trend reports, economic data, industry publications, employment indicators and other such sources. Try to focus on finding third-party resources which are verifiable. Do note believe on something just because you heard it from two or three different sources. Make sure, you have done enough research on the matter before you believe it.

Find out data that validate the claims and also shows the significance of growth for that particular niche for the next 5 to 7 years.

Do your research and check the market’s pulse

How do you distinguish between a fad and a trend? Just look at the size of the prospective customer base. A fad will have very limited number and types of people as customers.

As a freelancer, you should always look for a niche that is a trend and not a fad. A fad will appeal to a very limited number of people which means you will have a very small market. On the other hand, a trend will attract more people, which means you will have more customers and more business. In niche with broader appeal will increase your chance of success.

Use the age barometer to factor longevity

Check the longevity of the niche. Generally niches that are termed as “hot” are already there for a long time. This means such particular niches have the potential of becoming a very good market in the future and they are growing steadily over the time. A long-standing concept that is becoming a “hot” niche also means that the customer base is expanding slowly and there is an extra surge of attention from the market.
