Get as much natural light as possible because it helps you to work better and save money at the same time. Natural light is better than lamps in your home office. There are non-obvious comforts that you can keep away. A seriously comfy chair, varieties of wall colors etc. should be kept away from your office. Always keep the printer from your computer, get the trash can and the shredder easily available.

I am a fan of it and I know it helps. Whether you only use the computer for everything you do, but still a whiteboard is the best choice. It offers a clearly visible space and offers you a chance to write your ideas and leave out reminders. It is quite less costly when you see the use. You also get whiteboards which you can roll up. Personalize it if you like to. You can also create one with a cardboard, little adhesive and plastic sheets.

6. Rescue your filing cabinet

Filing cabinets are often cluttered (at least mine are). It acts like an extra storage facility for your papers and items. It your filing cabinet is cluttered then this is a sign of a problem with your filing system. You can rescue your filing cabinets with few thoughts – better labels, rethinking the use and purpose. Find out a good document organizing system and stick to it.

5. Charge and stash your gadgets away

Today you need several gadgets including your cell, camera, iPod, laptop battery, work phone (I haven’t included those likes of kindle ebook readers and all those art-of-the-state-gadgets). All these gadgets need space and charge. Keep all these gadgets off your desk in your home office and create a separate, easy to found and charged space.

4. Keep wires out of sight

Not all people can keep the wires away by becoming wireless. You can make your workplace wireless but if it is not yet wireless, then make sure to keep wires out of your sight. Why? Well, I feel them distracting, disturbing and making me sick. Keep the wires away and make them invisible to you.

You need to work 8-10 hours a day (14-16 hours also). But your body may not be able to take it everyday if it is not comfortable. Make your desk and chair comfortable for you. Do not buy a new plastic box just because you feel you need one. Check out the old plastic boxes. You may just need to change the label. A label maker will solve your problem and will get you the desired labels. It will not only solve your present problem of having a plastic box but will also solve the future problem of more boxes than needed.

Simple advice, but hard. Make sure everything reaches the places it should be. Once done with the file keep it in the file cabinet, once done with the coffee mugs keep them in their place, you’re your desk clean and keep away the files that you not need. Simple keep your home office CLEAN.
