Probably you are working from your home or want to start working from your home. It may be freelancing, starting your own business or work for others. However, the situation is the same. You are working from your home.

Even though working from home seems to be cool and easy it is not. There are many obstacles and among them two are very much disturbing – procrastination and laying on the couch (or a nap).

Working from home is tough because there is nobody to watch you and you are your own master. So often you feel like taking a break and lay in the couch, take a nap, watch the TV, play a game or so on. On the other hand if you are too focused on your work and you work hard you lose your personal life (this is exactly what is happening to me. Thanks to Neeta that I am still sane).

So you need to balance you life and work even in case of work from home business, job or a home-based business. I am providing a list compiled from various sources to keep you productive and sane at the same time. I follow a few of the steps myself though not all and keep the list handy all the time.

1. Get a separate work from home space

Get a separate room for your work from home business. Getting a room helps you to avoid many problems and get you in the mood of working.

2. Set regular hours, and stick to the schedule

3. Dress up

Even though you are working from home for your home-based business, but dress up appropriately. Never be in pajamas and with unshaven beard. If you used to shave everyday for your office, then shave now also. A proper dress lifts your mood and gets you ready for the work.

4. Close the door

As you have got a room for your home business so close the door. This will help you to maintain attention and avoid unnecessary distractions. Your family members or friends will not disturb you when you shut the door.

5. Keep your work area tidy

Keep your work area including your desk clean and tidy. This helps you to go to work mood and saves time.

6. Turn off the telephone

If you want to concentrate on a specific work and do not want distraction, then turn your mobile phones and landlines. Even not using the internet saves a lot of time.

7. Don’t stop working if it’s a hard day

Some of your days may be hard- your clients may have problems, you may not find a solution to a problem, the work may not advance as planned. But never get disheartened. Stick to it. You will definitely make some improvement.

8. Make a list

Make a “To-Do” list so that you do not have to ponder what to do next and do not forget works to be done. A to-do list helps in a big way in accomplishing tasks. My life and speed of work changed after I started using it.

9. Start the day properly

Start your day in a good way. Have a good breakfast, pray if needed, work out, walk or do other exercises. Make it a good morning.

10. Have a good chair

Find a chair that you like. If your furniture is not good, then you will not like it. Spend little more but get a really good chair for you.

11. Get a notepad and pencil nearby

A pencil and notebook help in a big way. You can note down the ideas, works to be done, any specific information. Some ideas that occur in odd times can become great ideas.

12. Get breaks

Don’t push you too much. Get breaks in between. After very one or two hours get a few minutes break.

13. Don’t go back to work when you’ve finished

If you have completed the day’s work and suddenly a good idea occurs, don’t get back to work. Write it down in a paper or in your notebook with the main points and work later.

14. Find out your best time and utilize it

Everyone has a best time. Your best time may be in the morning, during noon or in the evening. So schedule the most important work at this time.

15. Have a water bottle by your desk all the time

Water not only keeps you healthy and pure but will also help you to feel good. It will also force you to take loo breaks.
