Become a work from home businessman. Quit your 9-5 job and start living a LIFE.
What is a marketing plan and why is it so essential to the success of your business? Find out here, in the first section of our comprehensive guide to creating a marketing plan.
Businesses which are successful in marketing start with a marketing plan. Whether an organization is small or large, they all start with a marketing plan. Large businesses generally have plans that consist of hundreds of pages; small businesses have marketing plans that run for dozen of pages. You too need a marketing plan to market your work from home business. Start with a notebook. Refer to the marketing plan at a regular interval; quarterly, monthly or weekly. Monthly referral is always better. Do one more thing – add the sales/manufacturing component in your monthly reports so that you can see how your marketing plan is doing.
Start with a marketing plan for one year. This is good for small companies specially for work from home businesses. Time keeps changing and so once you start with a yearly marketing plan, you can move into a medium term marketing plan that covers the near future – next 2-5 years of time.
Writing a marketing plan is not easy. You may need a few months to write the few pages of your marketing plan. It’s actually developing a marketing plan instead of writing. Deciding what you want to do and how to do it in marketing is the biggest challenge and you need to address it correctly.
Your marketing plan generally starts with the fiscal year or with the start of a year. It’s your choice when to start developing a marketing plan.
Ok, once you develop the marketing plan, who should see it? All the people who are key players in your organization or business should see it, because they will use and implement it. You need to keep it private because your marketing plan will contain serious and confidential information about your business and you cannot divulge it to everyone, specially to your competition.
You need to have input from different segments and divisions of your business. No matter what size is of your business, you need to take input from various parts of your company: finance, personnel, manufacturing, supply and most importantly from marketing. Why do you need to take into account so much input from so many different divisions? You need to do this because then you will be able to take all aspects of your company in your marketing plan in order it to work. Key people from various departments will be able to provide realistic input on what’s achievable and how you can reach them. They will also be able to share their insights on new potential, as-yet-unrealized marketing opportunities and business points which will add another dimension to your plan. Now if you are the only one who manages your business, then? Ok then you will have to wear all your hats at one time and develop a marketing plan.
Is a marketing plan same with a business plan. No. A business plan is a lot bigger entity of your business. A business plan is like a vision of your business and states what you want to do in your business and how you want to achieve it. Marketing plan is a part of the business plan or the business. Your
Marketing plan offers several benefits-
Rallying point
Your marketing plan offers you and your people something to rally behind. A marketing plan is like a guiding document which shows what you want to achieve, how you want to accomplish that and how your people can help in here. It also gives a mark to your people which they can use to compare the results with. It also brings together all the people and gives them a target. They feel like a team and feel committed when you share your vision with them through your marketing plan. This can be a very good motivation for your people.
Chart to success
A marketing plan is chart to success and making money. It may seem that planning is taking lots of time and you feel like wasting your time. But actually you are saving your business by planning. Even an inaccurate plan is better than not having a plan. If you do not plan then you plan to fail. It’s like a ship. It is always better to reach somewhere few degrees off your destination rather than not having a destination and wandering in the sea.
Company operational instructions
Marketing plan for your own business is like a step by step guide to your success. When you buy a DVD player or a home gym it comes with a set of instructions and you follow that. Don’t you think your own business is much more complex than that and putting it together is harder? So, won’t you need a step by step guide for it? A good marketing plan will put all your business elements in place and combine them for success.
Captured thinking
The marketing plan captures whatever in your mind and your key people’s minds. The information provided in the marketing plan helps you to keep in mind what you agreed to do. This will help you to remember your goal even you have to face different situations that you thought of about your business.
Top-level reflection
When engaged in the daily operation of the business you cannot thing about the big picture that you need to think about for your business. It needs some special and extra time. Writing a marketing plan offers you the chance to think about the big picture as a whole and decide what you need to do to achieve what you want to achieve. Take time off away from the daily operations and then concentrate on the marketing plan. GO for a retreat, go to a distant place, a place that you love and then start writing the success manual for your own business.
Once you complete writing a marketing plan then you can review it from time to time. Check the progress you have made according to the marketing plan. Even though it may be little hard sometime to find time for such reviews but it will help you by offering a parallel view of what is happening and what you want to happen. And that may be the hidden key for SUCCES.

I totally agree with the need for a marketing plan. I think marketing plays a much larger part of business than it used to since there are so many competitors now. I made a marketing plan for my blog yesterday, writing it all down was a good eye opener and I saw a few opportunities for improvement.
